From a Full Heart

In days of peace my fellow-men

When the War is over and the battle has been won,

The Captains and the Kings depart--

Dawn after weary dawn I start

When the War is over and we've done the Belgians proud,
I'm going to keep a chrysalis and read to it aloud;
When the War is over and we've finished up the show,
I'm going to plant a lemon-pip and listen to it grow.

The 'eathen

The 'eathen

The 'eathen in 'is blindness bows down to wood an' stone;
'E don't obey no orders unless they is 'is own;

An' then comes up the regiment an' pokes the 'eathen out.

All along o' dirtiness, all along o' mess,

All along of abby-nay, kul, an' hazar-ho, *

The young recruit is 'aughty -- 'e draf's from Gawd knows where;
They bid 'im show 'is stockin's an' lay 'is mattress square;
'E calls it bloomin' nonsense -- 'e doesn't know no more --
An' then up comes 'is Company an' kicks 'im round the floor!

The young recruit is 'ammered -- 'e takes it very 'ard;
'E 'angs 'is 'ead an' mutters -- 'e sulks about the yard;
'E talks o' "cruel tyrants" 'e'll swing for by-an'-by,
An' the others 'ears an' mocks 'im, an' the boy goes orf to cry.

'E learns to do 'is watchin' without it showin' plain;
'E learns to save a dummy, an' shove 'im straight again;
'E learns to check a ranker that's buyin' leave to shirk;
An' 'e learns to make men like 'im so they'll learn to like their work.

An' when it comes to marchin' he'll see their socks are right,
An' when it comes to action 'e shows 'em 'ow to sight;
'E knows their ways of thinkin' and just what's in their mind;
'E knows when they are takin' on an' when they've fell be'ind.

Of all 'is five years' schoolin' they don't remember much

It looks like teachin' wasted when they duck an' spread an' 'op,
But if 'e 'adn't learned 'em they'd be all about the shop!

An' now it's "'Oo goes backward?" an' now it's "'Oo comes on?"
And now it's "Get the doolies," an' now the captain's gone;
An' now it's bloody murder, but all the while they 'ear
'Is voice, the same as barrick drill, a-shepherdin' the rear.

'E's just as sick as they are, 'is 'eart is like to split,
But 'e works 'em, works 'em, works 'em till he feels 'em take the bit;
The rest is 'oldin' steady till the watchful bugles play,
An' 'e lifts 'em, lifts 'em, lifts 'em through the charge that wins the day!

The 'eathen in 'is blindness bows down to wood an' stone;

But the backbone of the Army is the non-commissioned man!

Keep away from dirtiness -- keep away from mess.

Ave Caesar

Pro Patria

DULCE ET DECORUM EST

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

The first Midterm

My first experience with Midterms was spotty. The first issue was Holy Week. The Midterm, just happened to fall on Easter weekend, along with a quiz. Predictably, some students requested more time due to the Holiday. That's no big deal, but several other students also just decided on their own to take extra time to complete their essays. All of the students that didn't make prior arrangements for this lost points off their final grade.

Then there were the students who couldn't follow instructions - I received exams without citations, exams in the wrong file format, exams that referrenced websites, exams with incorrect formatting, exams with no names in the files, exams with each question in a different file, and exams which didn't identify which question the student was answering. I also noticed that very few of my students bothered to proofread or spell check their exams. You'd think that for 20% of the course grade, they would be willing to spend an extra ten minutes doing that.

One student's exam was particularly bad. She didn't really address the questions, provided sporadic citations, and had no real meat to her analysis. She also didn't write in the specified essay format (you know, the old high school one - intro, points, conclusion). I was quite surprised at how many of my students struggled with the essay format. Maybe English Comp 1 should be required before they can take our courses.

Then there was the plagiarist. We'll call him Zeke - because there aren't any Zekes in my classes. Zeke's English skills are not great at any time. His grammar and spelling leave a lot to be desired. From his Discussion posts it is obvious that English is not Zeke's native tongue. I knew something was wrong with Zeke's essay as soon as I began reading it - the sentence structure was far too complex, the English was better than my own, the vocabulary was that of a distinguished historian. It was definitely not Zeke's typic work.

So I fired up EVE, my plagiarism detection software, and pointed it at Zeke's essay. When EVE was done, she said that 30% of Zeke's paper was plagiarized, highlighted the sections, and gave me a comparison of Zeke's paper and the website in question. The only part of Zeke's paper that was plagiarized was the opening paragraph - about 3 sentences that were directly lifted from the wesbite with no attribution. Bummer.

To see how easy it was to find the material Zeke copied, I did a google search on the Essay's topic, and Zeke's source was the first website in the list. (Question: What's more depressing than student plagiarism? Answer: Lazy student plagiarism). So I documented my findings, discussed them with my Faculty Mentor, and sent them off to our Program Chair. Zeke failed that essay with a "0", and receieved what was a generous "C" on the other essay, giving him a horrendously low grade for the midterm. Worse yet, although Zeke has posted Discussion comments after receiving his grade, he's made no effort to contact me regarding the grade for his essay.

On the bright side, a student that had disappeared the first part of the semester due to family problems re-appeared with an above average Midterm and a request to take the quizzes she missed under the late policy. After a brief exchange about the nature of her problems participating, I was happy to allow that. I did admonish her that she needed to inform me about potential problems before she missed assignments, though.

And my best students all turned in the type of work I expected from them - high "B" / low "A" material. The best Midterm was turned in by a student who comes across as a smart-aleck slacker in the Discussion Posts. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

Hopefully the Finals and Research Assignments will go better.
